Ok, so you've decided to look a little further into joining a network marketing company, what do you do next?
There are three things that we recommend that you need to look for. The right products, the right company and the right mentor. Until you can tick all three of these, you need to keep looking!



Finding the right product is crucial.  You’ll be recommending these products to your friends, family and new people you meet.  It needs to be something you can be passionate and enthusiastic about.

Products you believe in

It needs to be an industry or a category you can get enthusiastic about. If it’s not something you would use, find something else. You can’t credibly recommend something you don’t use or believe in.

Relevant products with a big target market

You are going to be looking for potential customers for your products, so avoid anything which is niche, appeals to only a certain type of person or isn’t on trend.

An established product NEED - avoid fads

If you are to be successful at network marketing, you need to be getting paid for years to come. Something that will only be around for a few months or years or is the “latest craze” should be avoided. Find something with a solid and long term need.

Unique products

If the products you are looking at are available in the shops, or something that satisfies the same need is, walk away. You need to find something that isn’t available elsewhere or is significantly better or different to other things that are available.

Proven products

Find products that have a history of success. Find products that have long-standing customers. Products that have customers that have been using the product for years can show the potential for long term income for a distributor.



Finding the right company is also vital. Don’t forget, if you are planning to be successful, you’ll be forging a long term relationship with this company. They’ll be the ones ultimately paying you commission for years to come.  Look for companies that are…

Member of the DSA

If the company is a member of the Direct Selling Association, you can be assured that….

  • You are protected from having to invest lots of money
  • The company is financially sound
  • The company is obliged to buy back any excess stock should you leave
  • The company works within the code of conduct of the Direct Selling Association

If the company you are looking to work with isn’t registered with the DSA, we wouldn’t recommend you work with them. If you do, be wary.

A history and track record of creating successful distributors

An established company with a track record is crucial to the long term stability and future of your business. You want to be building a business for years to come, so find a company that has a track record of doing it and has distributors who have been working with the company for many years.

Low franchise fee with immediate profit opportunity

If you are looking for a little extra income, the last thing you want to do is have to pay a high fee to start your business. Also try to avoid companies where you have to qualify for a certain position before earning commission. You want to be able to earn commission from day one. A low franchise fee (aim below £100) with immediate earning potential means that you earn back the money you spent on the franchise fee sooner. As soon as you’ve done that, you’re in profit and many, many traditional start-up businesses don’t make a profit for the first few years, if ever!

Has a clear vision and mission

You will be sharing this vision so look for a company that knows what it stands for. If the companies vision is about sales or getting lots of different products to market, think hard about if you want to get involved.

No stock holding

If you are looking for a part-time opportunity, we think you should look to avoid things that take up unnecessary time. If you have to buy from the company then re-sell, that takes time. If you have to deliver the products yourself, that takes time. If you have to deliver brochures, that takes time. We recommend looking for a company that does all this for you, so you can spend time recommending the products and finding people to join your team.

No minimum monthly payments/purchases

We firmly believe in finding a personal franchise that lets you do things at your own pace. Minimum targets create undue pressure and don’t allow you to grow your business at YOUR pace.

Training and support from the company

You want to be in business FOR yourself, not BY yourself. Find a company that has plenty of training literature and helps you to get off to a fast start in learning about the company’s products and the business opportunity.

Flexible hours

One of the beauties of network marketing is that it’s flexible. You can shape your business around your life, not the other way round as is the case with many traditional businesses. Make sure you can do the business alongside what you currently do. Beginning the business as a secondary source of income rather than primary income helps to keep it pressure-free. Without pressure, you’ve a better chance of developing your business


Find a company that has fun! Whilst you aren’t employed by the company, you will be spending a lot of time around it. If you can’t see it being fun, it sounds like another “job”!



When you join a network marketing company, you will sign up under an existing franchisee. This person will be your sponsor. In most network marketing companies, it’s very difficult (sometimes impossible) to change uplines at a later date. If you want to be successful in network marketing, you need to learn from the best. Signing up with someone who is successful (or is in the team of someone successful) is important to be able to learn from their experiences and path to success.

Someone you get along with

You need to have a connection with the person you are signing up with – even if you don’t really know them. You’ll be learning from this person so if you can’t stand to be in the same room as them, you might want to look elsewhere for a sponsor!

Someone with a track record of developing successful distributors

You want to be successful? Learn from someone who has helped other people become successful. Makes sense, right?

Training & support

In the early days of your new business, you are going to need to learn a lot. Find someone to learn from who has the time and the tools to train you. Ask what your training will look like and what you can expect from them.

Find an upline who cares, someone who takes as much pride in the success for their team as they do in their own. Only people who genuinely want you to succeed will give you everything.
